Mind Shift: You Don’t Have to Be a Genius to Think Like One
By: Erwin Raphael McMannus
Topic: Mindset and Personal Growth
Content: Clean
This book is consistently in my top 5 of recommended reading when someone asks me for a good book.
A mind shift is exactly what it sounds like. It is a shift in mindset or way of thinking. While the definition might be easy, the process is certainly not. Undoing old patterns of thought and replacing them with new ones takes time, but it is possible.
In his book, McMannus walks the reader through 12 transformative mind shift that he has learned over the years. He believes that if a person will adopt some or all of these mindsets, and allow them to influence their thinking, they will see radical changes in their lives and careers. All of the mind shifts focus on what the reader can do, and therefore removes the excuses. However, McMannus does this in a way that leaves your feeling hopeful, not condemned.
The twelves mind shifts listed in the book are:
It’s All About People
You Don’t Need an Audience
You Can’t Take Everyone With You
They Won’t Get it Until You Do It
You are Your Own Ceiling
Talent is a Hallucinogen
No One Know What They Are Doing
Bitterness, and Other Poisons That Will Kill You
You Find What You Are
Be Average (At Almost Everything)
Success Weighs More Than Failure
There is No Such Thing as Too Much of a Good Thing
Each of these is a separate chapter, and this makes it easy to go back and reference whichever one speaks to you the most. Trust me, you’ll be going back over and over.
The mind shifts that impacted me the most were #’s 3, 5, 8, and 11. Your experience may be different. This book is small enough to read in a few days, but is structured in a way that allows you to read a single chapter and then walk away to think about it for a while before picking it up again. If you struggle with negative or false narratives in your thought processes, then this book is for you. If you have wondered if you are holding yourself back somehow, then this is for you. I simply cannot recommed the book highly enough.
